Rooted in Christ, Growing Together: A Year in Colossians

written by Michelle Hamann

Over this past year, something beautiful has been growing at Friendship Baptist Church—ladies from all seasons of life gathering around God’s Word, walking slowly and intentionally through the book of Colossians (eventually finishing this series with encouragement from the book of Philemon).

From pre-teens to grandmothers, new believers to seasoned saints, the thread that has bound us together isn’t age or background—it is Christ.

Colossians has reminded us Who Jesus is:

  • the Image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:5),
  • the One in Whom all things hold together (Colossians 1:17).

Month by month, chapter by chapter, we have opened our Bibles and opened our hearts.

  • We’ve wrestled with truth.
  • We’ve confessed sin.
  • We’ve prayed with and over one another.
  • We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve listened, and we’ve learned.
  • Some came weary.
  • Some came hungry.
  • All came expectant—ready to see what the Lord would have in store for us.

Throughout the year, we’ve been reminded that we are “rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith” (Colossians 2:7).

As we’ve met in the Chapel each month to hear the Word from our pastors’ wives, we have learned to set our minds on things above (Colossians 3:2).

We’ve been challenged to put off the old self and put on the new, to clothe ourselves in compassion, kindness, and patience—and to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts (Colossians 3:8-15).

But God has done more than teach us and admonish us through this letter from Paul—He has also continued to knit our hearts together as a body of sisters in Christ.

  • Generations have encouraged one another.
  • Life stories have been shared.
  • Biblical wisdom has been passed down.

As we look ahead, may we all continue to “let the word of Christ dwell in us richly” (Colossians 3:16), and may the seeds sown this year continue to bear fruit in our homes, in Friendship Baptist Church, and in our world.

Ladies of all ages, there are still a few months left in our current study of Colossians/Philemon. Reach out to the FBC office if you are interested in learning more about our Ladies’ R.E.A.L. Time Bible studies and fellowship times.

About Friendship Baptist Church

Our purpose is to make much of our Lord Jesus Christ and His gospel through the preaching of His Word and the making of disciples. At Friendship Baptist Church (FBC) we teach the Bible in order to facilitate spiritual growth in all of God’s people and to provide opportunities for Christian fellowship. God has graciously used Friendship to further His work both locally and across the globe since 1965.
